ATA Recessed Hardware or Surface Hardware ...
Recessed hardware is ATA airline-approved and is mounted in recessed plates so the surface of the case is flush, helping to protect the hardware from being hit and dislodged during travel. ATA hardware also includes thick ball-type corners that serve as a "first line of defense" for the rest of the case during abusive shipping and handling.
Surface hardware is exactly opposite - it's mounted ON the surface, and protrudes slightly from the exterior of the case. Flat steel corners are used on all surface-mount hardware cases.
